by Major League Baseball’s 2022 postseason is almost here. The MLB regular season ends Wednesday (Oct. 5) and the expanded 12-team playoffs begin Friday (Oct. 7) with the best-of-three Wild Card series. This is the longest playoff field ever for a full 162 game season and you can read more about the new format here. The 12-team field was finalized after the Braves clinched the NL East on Tuesday night, and the rest of the wild card was settled. Game times for the Wild Card Series were announced Wednesday.
We know that the 2022 MLB postseason will extend beyond October. Game 4 of the 2022 World Series is scheduled for Tuesday, November 1st, so that’s a guaranteed date. Game 7 of the World Series is scheduled for Saturday, November 5th. It would be the last World Series game in MLB history. Because the first week of the regular season was postponed due to the owners’ lockout, each team had three makeup games added to the end of their schedule.
Here are some other things to know about this year’s postseason schedule:
- The best of three Wild Card Series will be played over three consecutive days. There is no rest in the series.
- There are no off days between Games 4 and 5 of the LDS or between Games 5 and 6 of the LCS. Travel could be nightmares if teams meet on opposite coasts.
- The World Series follows the usual 2-3-2 format with off days between Games 2 and 3 and Games 5 and 6.
