California ban on natural gas cars by 2035 ‘difficult’

Toyota Motor Corporation President Akio Toyoda told reporters Thursday that California’s 2035 ban on the sale of new natural gas vehicles will be “difficult” to achieve given current battery technology and the limitations facing electric vehicles. state network.

As Fox News reported, Toyoda was reacting to a new order imposed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and the powerful California Air Resources Board (CARB), which will require nearly all new car sales to include electric vehicles in just 12 years.

Fox News noted:

The chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation said this week that meeting California’s plan to ban emissions vehicles will be “difficult” to achieve and that battery cars will take longer to phase in than they think the “main media”.

“Realistically speaking, it seems rather difficult to actually achieve them,” Toyota Motor Corporation President Akio Toyoda told reporters through a translator Thursday discussing California’s new mandates.

Toyoda outlined the challenges to EV adoption, including the impact on the power grid and the lack of easy access to electricity by an estimated one billion people around the world.

As Breitbart News reported, Gov. Newsom announced his ban on the sale of new natural gas vehicles in 2035, just weeks after the state suffered back-to-back power outages during a heat wave in 2020. And last month, the state urged electric vehicle owners not to charge their cars during the afternoon and evening hours due to electricity supply restrictions — just days after CARB cleared the new electric vehicle mandate.

The state’s power grid would need to expand capacity by about 30 percent to turn California into an all-electric fleet — and it would have to do so by eliminating nuclear power and reducing fossil fuels to 10 percent of the energy supply.

Toyota was one of the pioneers in “green” vehicles, introducing the Prius hybrid to great success on the market a decade and a half ago.

In 2014, Toyota moved thousands of jobs from Torrance, California to a consolidated headquarters in Texas.
