BASIC POINTS
- Reinhardt is great for holding choke points and contesting objectives
- Suffers in open spaces where it can be easily surrounded
- His changes give him an incentive to balance offense and defense
Despite receiving some notable changes in “Overwatch 2,” Reinhardt still plays pretty much the same as in the original game. His role as a defensive anchor remains, but his focus has now shifted slightly towards being more offensive than before.
Reinhardt is a melee character that works best when in the heat of battle. It can unsettle enemies and protect teammates, though players unaccustomed to close range brawling may find this a difficult act to balance.
Here are some tips on how to use this “Overwatch 2” hero more effectively.
“Overwatch 2” Reinhardt changes and playstyle
There are three main changes to Reinhardt’s kits that old players should note:
- His shield now has slightly less health
- Fire Strike now has two categories
- The charge can now be canceled earlier
The hero can still be used the same way as before, but keep in mind that his barrier won’t be able to last as long. With that said, players are incentivized to play a little more aggressively and smartly to get the most out of Rein’s kit.

Overwatch 2
As a melee character, Reinhardt excels in corners and tight targets. Payload maps with tight lanes like King’s Row, Rialto, and Circuit Royale are great for an attacking Reinhardt because he can pressure enemies from the basket.
Billing is also much more reliable as an engagement tool now. Even if it doesn’t pin enemies, it can be used to dive a back line of stationary supports like Zenyatta or Baptiste.
Earthshatter remains unchanged, so feel free to use it whenever allied ends are completed or when a significant number of the enemy team is vulnerable.
Reinhardt Tips
The shield becomes much more oppressive after removing an enemy. With less DPS to burn the barrier, Reinhardt gets more room to push the advantage.
Avoid ducking behind the barrier. Reinhardt is extremely hard to kill up close, especially since he can take down most heroes with three swings of his hammer, so keep pushing and keep the enemy confused.
Always play for control in tight spaces. Reinhardt is most dangerous when enemy escape routes are limited. At the same time, avoid picking Reinhardt on open maps like the first Junkertown checkpoint.
