A Missouri woman who was allegedly held captive for about a month as a sex slave was found by police with an electric dog collar around her neck that restricted her breathing and wearing latex underwear, according to reports.
The woman had left the home of the suspect, identified as Timothy M Haslett, 39, of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, who was arrested on October 7.
Haslett, a father of one, faces charges of first-degree rape and kidnapping, as well as second-degree assault.
The woman looked weak and frail, probably due to malnutrition. She was released from the home early on October 7 and approached neighbors for help, claiming she had been abducted and raped, the report said. Kansas City Star newspaper, citing the police.
“When we made contact with her, it was apparent that she had been held against her will for a significant period of time,” Excelsior Springs Police Lt. Ryan Dowdy said.
The metal collar was unlocked by police as it restricted the woman’s breathing.
The woman pointed to the house where she was being held captive, according to a probable cause statement from a detective.
She reached out to several neighbors for help, who said her voice was as faint as a whisper. They added that she had bruises on her wrist and duct tape around her neck.
Lisa Johnson, a neighbor who saw her, said the 100-pound woman was covered in bruises and struggling to climb her porch steps, according to KSHB News.
“She didn’t have much of a voice,” Ms. Johnson told the agency. “It was more of a light ‘help me’ than anything else.”
The neighbor called the police as the woman said her alleged abductor would kill them both if they didn’t get help.
Ciara Tharp, a relative of an elderly neighbor of the woman who heard her screaming and banging on the door told KSHB that the woman had a ligature mark on her hands.
The woman said to the old lady, “You must help me, I have been raped, I have been held captive.”
“My grandmother could tell she was weak,” MsTharp said. “He didn’t have many clothes. He said she had a metal dog collar around her neck and could see the ligature marks around her wrists.’
The woman told police she was arrested on Prospect Avenue in Kansas City in early September.
“He restrained her with handcuffs on her wrists and ankles. He was able to free himself when he took his child to school,” the probable cause affidavit said.
The woman told police the suspect “whipped” and raped her “frequently” and kept her in a small room in a basement.
The suspect was due to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon as police determined whether there were other victims. The woman’s statement suggests there could have been other victims who were injured or in danger inside the home.
However, police did not find any other possible victims when they searched the suspect’s home.
In a Facebook post, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said “it will take time to use this information to determine if the suspect in this case is connected to other crimes.”
“And when these things have happened, there will still be very little law enforcement can share until the case goes to court,” he said.
