To play Overwatch 2, you need to register a mobile phone number, but prepaid phones don’t work in all cases. This situation has caused some in the community frustration, and Blizzard will be talking to fans about the situation very soon.
A Blizzard spokesperson told GameSpot that the company will “address this situation shortly.” That could happen as soon as this afternoon, the spokesman said.
«Ήταν πολύ ενθουσιασμένοι [Overwatch 2]but due to SMS number requirement, they can’t play,” this person said.
beloved @PlayOverwatch:
I have four teenagers who loved playing Overwatch together on their switches. They played this way for well over a year and paid for the game out of their own money.
They were very excited about OW2, but because of the SMS number requirement, they can’t play.— Ryan Markel (@ryanmarkel) October 4, 2022
Overwatch 2 requires a phone number to play to prevent bad actors from being able to use cheats and browse multiple additional accounts that all share the same phone number.
“We’re quite actively trying to identify and find users who have abnormal gameplay, distinct gameplay behavior, or are detected by any cheating fingerprints that we might do,” Overwatch 2 lead software engineer Bill Warnecke said. “But if that player bans that account and can come right back with a new account, then all the tracking in the world won’t stop us from keeping bad actors out of the game. We have to make the cost of being willing to cheat a little more for those players. Losing an account in Overwatch 2 is a much more significant penalty than it was in Overwatch 1.”
Aside from the phone number requirement causing headaches for some, not everyone who has Overwatch 2 can play it. The game is experiencing widespread server issues and “massive” DDoS attacks that are ruining the experience for many.
The Overwatch 1 servers were shut down on October 2 to prepare for the release of the sequel.
In our ongoing Overwatch 2 review, reviewer Jessica Howard mostly enjoyed her first few hours with the game, though she questioned whether it’s a true successor to the iconic original. “Where it counts, Overwatch 2 looks like a fantastic update to a multiplayer game with mechanics that allow for exciting skirmishes between teams of heroes,” he wrote. “However, as a separate entity and continuum, it stumbles.”
