Every new Overwatch hero comes with animated shorts, and the tradition continues with Overwatch 2’s Kiriko. Kiriko’s 10-minute intro video, which was released during the TwitchCon keynote, features the ninja healer as someone who’s bubbly , but has his own share of worldly problems – in the form of an overbearing but well-meaning mother.
Kiriko is also friends with her apartment complex’s maintenance man and his deaf granddaughter. Kiriko uses sign language to communicate with the girl and later, when the bad guys burst onto the scene, she shows off her healing abilities by healing the grandfather when he is shot by one of the bad guys.
Her mom, witnessing the whole affair, realizes that Kiriko has grown so much. The two then embrace, each making compromises to strengthen their relationship. Kiriko says she’ll go home more often, and Kiriko’s mom says something like she promises to stop whining.
Kiriko is one of the first very new heroes in Overwatch 2, the successor and replacement of Overwatch. While it’s immediately free to anyone with an original Overwatch account, players with a brand new Overwatch 2 account will have to either buy it or skip the grind and buy the battle pass directly to get it.
Overwatch 2’s launch saw a bumpy launch, with server congestion keeping players queuing for hours and a phone registration requirement that excluded some prepaid phone plans making players unhappy. Blizzard made changes to the phone registration requirement. All players who have played Overwatch on PC do not need to meet the SMS protection requirements, and those on consoles who have played Overwatch since June 2021 are also exempt.
