The Wasps put their financial problems to one side and held off their return to Bath to secure their first Premiership win of the season at the Recreation Ground.

Bassett doubled his tally but two tries from Tom Dunn and one from Jonathan Joseph reduced the gap to eight points.

However, Wasps’ defense survived the late onslaught for a bonus-point win.

The Wasps traveled to Bath under a dark cloud as owners Wasps Holding Limited lodged a High Court notice on Wednesday over an unpaid tax bill.

Although the move was to give the club more time to find investment, rather than mean he was in management, it leaves question marks over Wasps’ long-term future.

On the pitch at least, the visitors had the upper hand, having won their last six league meetings with Bath, and pumped the pressure early to get the first points on the board through two penalties for Jacob Umaga.

A trio of tries in seven minutes opened the floodgates. Bassett brought down his own marker and Willis added another from close range after the TV referee intervened, while Porter’s effort was singled out for excellent ball handling in the set-up.

Matt Gallagher – a last-minute injury replacement before kick-off – returned for Bath at half-time, but it looked the same old story for a winless side who, despite most visits to the Wasps 22, had almost no points. show for it.

Bassett’s second pushed the advantage to 29 points, however Bath captain Dunn began to turn the tide when he walked over the line in the pack.

When Willis was sent to the bin for a collision, Bath further capitalized as Joseph sidestepped under the posts before Dunn set up a nervy finish with his side’s fourth of the night to ensure they walked away with a point .

However, it was too little too late as Umaga’s fifth penalty ensured Wasps walked away with a morale-boosting win. Bath, meanwhile, are still looking for their first win of Johann van Graan’s reign.
