The long-awaited second installment of the Slime Rancher series, Slime Rancher 2, brings Beatrix and the player to a new island filled with new areas, slimes and mysteries to uncover. While this beloved franchise is fairly easy to get into, the number of systems being played can be overwhelming and it can be easy to get a little stuck. Luckily, we have some tips to get you started effectively for players going into the series with the new game or returning players who might be a little rusty.
Customize your experience
When you first start Slime Rancher 2, the game presents you with an initial settings screen. Don’t be afraid to disable things like Feral Slimes or Tarr if you prefer a calmer experience. The tutorials will be useful for newer players to understand the systems carried over from the last game as well. There’s no wrong way to play, and since the game is friendly enough for players of all skill levels and ages, there’s no need to push yourself to take on the more intensive elements of the game if you’re not here for it.
Pace yourself
Don’t worry if you feel like you’re not progressing super fast! It takes time to build a Slime Ranch from scratch. focus on a coop or two and supplement your income from the plot by going on excursions to the rest of the island. Eventually, you’ll start getting a more steady flow of plots (and thus Newbucks, the in-game currency), and it’ll be easier to upgrade and maintain your ranch in the Observatory.
Grow slime largo
Largo Slimes are Slimes that have eaten the scent of another Slime. This forces them to take on traits (and the diet) of whatever Slime they combine with, making it easier to feed Largos. Largos will also spawn two plots instead of one like their regular ones, making them valuable for any breeder looking to make a quick buck.
Avoid Tarr
Tarr are Largo Slimes that have eaten a share they cannot produce on their own. This causes them to mutate into Tarr and begin attacking other Slimes, turning them into Tarr in the process. To prevent your Largo Slimes from becoming Tarr, make sure you keep them away from any tentacles they don’t spawn themselves – especially if you already have a handful of Largos on hand that you don’t want to replace.
Track land prices

Each plot has a price, which fluctuates every day based on supply and demand. Basically, the more of a particular plot you sell, the less value it will have the next day. On the other hand, what you don’t sell one day may increase in price the next. Play the market a bit to make sure you get as many Newbucks as you can.
So start the ranch
Slimes aren’t the only thing an aspiring Slime Rancher needs for their ranch! Instead of a corral, you can use one of the patches found in the Observatory and elsewhere to grow a specific type of fruit or vegetable. Bringing a carrot patch and a pogoberry tree to the Observatory early can help keep your Slimes well fed and happy so they can produce more chunks to use as needed. The Coop will allow you to raise hens and roosters for barks that also prefer meat.
Go exploring
Rainbow Island is a huge place — you might not be able to access everything from the start, but even the starting area has many types of Slimes to catch, each with their own plots to sell. Pink Slimes abound near the Observatory, but head slightly west and you’ll find Cotton Slimes (and Phosphor Slimes at night), as well as Tabby Slimes just south of this area. Other areas of the island will have completely different types of Slimes, so be sure to explore to find them all. Once you explore enough, you might even find the rare Gordo Slimes.
Feed the Gordos
Gordo Slimes are bulky Slimes, even bigger than Largos. Gordos can’t be vacuumed (or moved at all) due to their size, but feed them enough of the desired food and they’ll spawn in a sea of smaller Slimes, as well as discover mysterious portals to other parts of the island. which we will not spoil here.
