‘The Midnight Club’ Season 2: Everything We Know

If, like me, you just finished ‘The Midnight Club’ on Netflix, the latest horror series from Mike Flanagan, you might have one central question:

There will be a season 2, right?

Midnight Club ends with a large number of cliffhangers and unfinished storylines, seemingly demanding a second season all to itself. While this isn’t unusual for many shows, it is is unusual for a Mike Flanagan series and something I didn’t expect to see here. The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass were all standalone, one-season stories, and I expected the same from The Midnight Club.

However, The Midnight Club is also a huge passion project for Flanagan, something he’s been trying to do for decades, and it’s also based on books that have more stories that can be adapted for future seasons. So he designed the show to need a second season and used his goodwill with Netflix to make it happen. But we do not they have an official statement that Season 2 is still coming and it’s too early to know exactly how Midnight Club performs.

What we do know is what Flanagan said about season 2 specifically. Here it is via Elite Daily:

“This was designed to be ongoing,” Flanagan said. “We probably won’t know for another month or so what Netflix wants to do. But this was too contrived to continue. Pike has a lot of books, so we have a lot of incredible material to draw from.”

“We didn’t answer some of the biggest questions of the season – those answers are there, but they were meant to be for next season,” he said. If Season 2 doesn’t happen, he’ll answer the questions in an…unusual way. “I’ll put them on Twitter,” he said.

Those lines Flanagan refers to? Now that the show is out, we know what it is. Spoilers follow.

  • The season finale reveals that Stanton has a Paragon tattoo. I’m pretty sure she’s the old cult leader’s daughter who doesn’t talk to her mom anymore. It also looks like she might be dying herself.
  • We never got any real answers about the creepy old man and old woman who keep showing up to Ilona and Kevin specifically, except that they could be “chronic eaters.”
  • Kevin in particular keeps showing up from the vision when Ilona experiences it. As the old man keeps turning in him when Ilona wakes up. This has happened a few times and makes me suspicious.
  • I’m not sure we know who actually lived in the basement originally with the bed down there and everything.
  • We still basically don’t know if the house and the ritual can heal people or not. You can chalk up the two treatments so far to possible misdiagnoses or natural good luck, and it looks like Shasta is probably sick again anyway.
  • We don’t know for sure if the members of the Midnight Club can remain as ghosts and communicate in anything other than perhaps extremely microscopic ways. The only ghost-like beings we see are the old man and the woman and the shadow of death that seems to follow those closest to death.
  • Why is Mark so nice and normal?? It is strange!

Anyway, we’ll have to hope for a season 2 and see when Netflix officially comments on it. As Flanagan says, it could be about a month.
