Recent spec leaks have suggested that the Pixel 7 Pro might not be much of an upgrade over the Pixel 6 Pro, but a new, more detailed leak suggests that, if anything, the camera might get some major improvements.
A full – and apparently official – list of specifications shared by the Google News Telegram channel (opens in new tab) (via leaker Yoga Brar (opens in new tab) and Phone Arena (opens in new tab)) includes a small detail we haven’t seen before – reference to 5x optical zoom.
The Google Pixel 6 Pro has 4x optical zoom, so if this spec leak is accurate, then the Pixel 7 Pro will be able to optically zoom more than its predecessor, and also more than most other phones outside of Samsung’s 10x zoom Galaxy S22 Ultra.

It’s not just the optical zoom that’s reportedly getting a boost, with 30x digital zoom listed, up from 20x on the Pixel 6 Pro.
That spec list – which was reportedly first spotted on a Taiwanese carrier’s website – also mentions new camera features such as Movie Motion Blur, which based on the name presumably adds a blurring effect to videos, perhaps like Cinematic Mode of the iPhone. and Macro Focus, which can enable better macro shots.
For what it’s worth, Movie Motion Blur is also listed as a feature for the standard Pixel 7, but those other things seem to only be relevant to the Pixel 7 Pro.
Other than that, the specs are basically everything we’ve heard before, and for the most part they look identical to the Pixel 6 series, although Face Unlock is mentioned, something that was missing from those phones but we’ve recently heard rumors of.
Of course, we’d take all of this with a grain of salt for now, but we’ll find out the truth very soon as the Pixel 7 series goes live on October 6th.
Analysis: contender for best camera phone?
The Google Pixel 6 Pro already ranks high on our list of the best camera phones, and if the above improvements are made, it’s likely that the Pixel 7 Pro will rank even higher.
Will it top the charts? That’s hard to say as it faces stiff competition from the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro series, but it certainly has a chance, especially as we’d expect there to be other camera performance improvements beyond the obvious. specification list.
There are likely to be software tweaks and the new Tensor G2 chipset may also boost the phone’s camera capabilities.
So while the sensors seemingly won’t change much – meaning there’s still a 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera and a 48MP telephoto lens – the actual capabilities could be vastly improved.
However, whether this will be enough to top the powerful new 48MP camera of the iPhone 14 Pro Max or the impressive zoom capabilities of the Galaxy S22 Ultra remains to be seen.
